Cross Country Skiing

The Mammoth Nordic Trail System offers many opportunities for cross country skiing, from short trips to full-day adventures. Many Mammoth Lakes vacation rentals offer easy access to these trails. 

Experiences

Looking for a guided experience? Try these adventures:

  • Mill City to McLeod Lake:
    Covering 7 miles, this experience starts at the Mill City trailhead and ends at McLeod Lake. Enjoy a variety of terrain – groomed and off-piste.
  • Shady Rest:
    This experience features 2.9 miles of groomed trails across moderate terrain. Wind through the forest as you experience all of Shady Rest’s trails. Start at the Welcome Center and Ranger Station. Expect to share the trails with snowshoers and dog walkers.
  • Main Lodge to Minaret Vista:
    Enjoy unforgettable views of the Ansel Adams Wilderness and Ritter Range as you make your journey from Main Lodge to Minaret Vista. This wide, flat trail is a great choice for beginners.

  • A Trail – 13.9 miles
  • B Trail – 4.7 miles
  • C Trail – 10.2 miles
  • D Trail – 11.2 miles
  • F Trail – 2.6 miles
  • G Trail – 13.4 miles
  • H Trail – 2.8 miles
  • I Trail – 12.9 miles
  • K Trail – 3.1 miles
  • L Trail – 5.4 miles

All trails have accessible parking and are shared with snowshoers and snowmobilers. The A Trail also offers restrooms.

If you’re ready to hit the slopes, you’ll find many Mammoth Mountain ski rentals located just a short distance from these trails.

Snowmobile Fun

Mammoth Lakes is home to hundreds of miles of roads and trails that are snowmobile-friendly. The MNTS offers three snowmobiling experiences that offer something for all types of adventurers and are just a short distance from Mammoth condo rentals.

Shady Rest to Deadman Creek

This is a beginner-friendly loop with groomed trails that wind through Jeffery Pine Forest and over open terrain. Enjoy views of Mammoth Mountain and San Joaquin Ridge as you follow this 22.3-mile experience.

Shady Rest to Minaret Vista

Another beginner-friendly tour, this option offers views of Ansel Adams Wilderness and Ritter Range. The 23.2-mile trip follows groomed trails and passes by the Main Lodge – a great place to grab a bite to eat or drink before heading back.

Experienced snowmobilers can extend the adventure and head to the top of San Joaquin Ridge.

Shady Rest to Bald Mountain

A long ride covering 52.3 miles, this half-day experience follows groomed trails on intermediate terrain. Enjoy a mix of open country and forest views, including the Long Valley Caldera. Pass by June Lake Junction on your way home, where you can refuel and grab a bite to eat.

Skating in Mammoth

The Mammoth Nordic Trail System is home to the only ice skating rink between Reno and Southern California. You’ll find it just behind the town’s library.

Figure and hockey skate rentals are available as well as sharpening and tuning services. 

When conditions are just right, many of the lakes along the trail system become natural skating rinks.

Snowshoeing in Mammoth

There are plenty of opportunities for snowshoeing at MNTS, with dozens of groomed trails to choose from:

  • Shady Rest
  • Sherwins Trailhead
  • Mammoth Scenic Loop
  • Main Lodge 
  • Lake Mary Road

Snowshoeing in Mammoth allows you to enjoy views of the Ritter Range and Ansel Adams Wilderness. Short snowshoeing experiences are also available, which are beginner-friendly and great for adventurers of all ages.
