Fishing and mountaineering go together, and the combination is always electric. Mammoth celebrates frenetic and competitive fishing in the mountains every season in a multitude of ways. Perhaps no seasonal fishing series is as genuine as the Ambush at the Lake Fishing Derby at Convict Lake.
Convict Lake in Mammoth offers some of the best fishing on the west coast with an incredible stock of brown and rainbow trout among other gamefish. What better way to enjoy some quality fishing in Mammoth while making it even more fun in a competition?
What is a Fishing Derby?
A fishing derby is another name for a fishing tournament. Competitors arise to the challenge against eager fishing amateurs and professionals. They rally around a specific set of rules typically regarding where they can fish, what they can catch, and what they are striving for (largest bass, longest trout, etc).
This fall fishing derby in Mammoth excels at giving a chance for all participants with a fair series of catch restrictions. For one, all legal catch are allowed over 14 inches. To really open up the boundaries, all ages are welcome. Event holders strive to make the series accessible but competitive.
Prizes, Victories, and Cold Hard Cash!
Visitors can find a tough challenge once they hit the water of Mammoth Lakes in July. This challenge comes with some sizable rewards. In total, competitors can aim for over $6,000 in resort prizes.
$2,200 is available as a straight cash bonus to be earned by some of the top competitors for the season. This particular prize is the centerpiece for the big Main Event Derby Weekend, which is Oct 26th to Oct 28th.
This weekend marks the peak of the fall season’s fishing events and derbies and attracts thousands of visitors. The competition will be toughest for this last weekend in October.
More prizes are released through a prize drawing. Each competitor can register one fish over 14 inches into the pool. The official rule for this Mammoth fishing derby is that any legal catch is allowed for entry. Follow California fishing policy for further details.
Smaller prizes will be available at the end of each weekend. The prizes are yet to be announced, but could include cash, vouchers, toys, and more. Overall, about 60 prizes are expected to be distributed for the Mammoth Lakes 2018 event series.
You don’t have to be a local to get involved. Simply stop by the Convict Lake Park fish store to officially check-in. Visit the same location by the store’s closing for the day to check-in the fish for the official prize drawing. There is no entry fee and designated parking is available at the park.
Guests are able to participate in multiple weekend derbies, but only one fish is allowed to be eligible per weekend. This means that competitors can take home what they are legally allowed to, but can only register their one top pick for the prize. They can do the same for the following weekend. Winners get their name posted online and go down in Convict Lake lore.
