Mammoth Lakes, California Hotel History
Named after the year of the California Gold Rush, 1849 Condos at Mammoth’s Canyon Lodge features private residence rentals. Like its name, 1849 Condos is rooted in Eastern Sierra history. Dave McCoy, founder of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, called 1849 Condos’ “home” for over 10 years. He resided in the complex’s only penthouse. Mr. Tanner, owner of Red’s Meadow and founder of the Bishop Mule Days Celebration and The American Mule Museum and Heritage Center, managed the property up to the year 2007.

Dave McCoy’s 3rd oldest child, Dennis “Pancho” McCoy, developed phase 1 of the property. Before becoming a developer, Pancho was a ski racer and competed in the Men’s Downhill at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France. Phase 1 is a concrete building and was the first of its kind. The cost of a 2 bedroom unit was $39,000. The cost of a 3 bedroom unit was $45,000. The condos cost $10,000 more than any other property in town.
Angelis Corporation constructed phase 2.

Mr. Tanner sold 1849 Condos its private sledding hill, located across from the property on Lakeview Blvd. This piece of property was originally intended for a condo development that would have extended from the top of Lakeview Blvd. down to the first stop sign. The plans consisted of several tower-like buildings and the operation of a train that would take folks up the hill to the ski resort and back home again. Andrea Lawrence was instrumental in putting the kibosh on the project stating the visual appearance of the complex would look like the Great Wall of China.
